So, you’ve completed the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) program—congratulations! But what happens next? Let’s break it down.

Post-SAP Program: Eligibility for the Return to Duty Drug Test

Once you’ve completed the SAP program, you become eligible for the return-to-duty drug test—a critical step to getting back on the road or returning to your job. Learn more about Step 5 in the FMCSA Clearinghouse.

How to Obtain a Return to Duty Drug Test

There are two primary ways to schedule your return-to-duty (RTD) drug test:

1. Through Your Current or New Employer

  1. If you’re still with your current employer, they will arrange the RTD drug test for you.
  2. If you’ve found a new employer, ask them to order your pre-employment drug test as an RTD drug test so it fulfills both requirements.

2. Through a C/TPA (Third-Party Administrator)

If you don’t have an employer (such as owner-operators), you’ll need to go through a C/TPA (Consortium/Third-Party Administrator) to manage your drug testing process.

  1. A C/TPA can facilitate the return-to-duty drug test on your behalf. Learn more about the alternative RTD drug test process.
  2. Pro tip: If you need a C/TPA, you can reach out to RTD CTPA Services at rtdctpa@gmail.com.

Final Steps: Clearing Your Record & Moving Forward

Once your return-to-duty drug test is completed, the employer or C/TPA that ordered it will enter your results into the Clearinghouse.

  1. Once your results are in the Clearinghouse, you are no longer prohibited.
  2. You won’t be at risk for downgrades.
  3. You can continue your career without this hanging over your head.

Now that Step 5 is complete, it’s time to move on to Step 6.
